Zavala County

Zavala County – Located in the famous Brush Country of South Texas, this special 80,000-acre ranch is a favorite spot for wildlife because of its diverse topography and mixture of mesquite and native brush.  Perfectly situated between the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers and only two hours from San Antonio and a short drive south of Uvalde between Highway 57 & 83.  Hunting packages available for Whitetail Deer, Native Quail – Bob White and Blues, Dove – White Wing and Mourning, Turkey, Duck and Javelina.  The LaPaloma Lodge, located on the Ranch provides accommodations and meals.  For more information, contact Chaparrosa Ranch, P.O. HEARD RANCH, located in the Special White-Winged Dove Zone, has four fields totaling 150 acres planted in sesame and other grains for dove hunting, which will be shredded at intervals.  Fifty acres of trees and brush are scattered throughout the field borders.  We have one shallow tank and are located 1/2 mile from the Nueces River 17 miles south of Uvalde in Zavala County.  We also offer HOG and DOE hunting. DOVE:

OPEN SEASONS, BAG AND POSSESSION LIMITS (Migratory Game Birds)

  • Daily Bag: No person shall possess more than one daily bag limit of birds while in the field or while returning from the field to one’s hunting camp, automobile, or temporary lodging facility (see Documentation, see above). For the first day of any season, the possession limit is the daily bag limit.

  • Possession: The possession limit shall apply at processing facilities and until the birds have reached the personal residence of the possessor and are finally processed (cleaned for consumption).

  • Legal Shooting Hours: From one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. During the Special White-winged Dove Season: noon to sunset. See http://www.sunrisesunset.com/usa/Texas.asp

Doves (please report leg bands to 1-800-327-BAND): Migratory game bird stamp endorsement required to hunt any doves in any season. NOTE: There is no closed season or bag limit restrictions for Eurasian collared-doves or common pigeons (rock doves); however, it is recommended that plumage be left on these birds for identification purposes.

North Zone: Regular Season: Sept. 1–Oct. 30, 2007.
Daily Bag Limit: 15 mourning, white-winged, and white-tipped (white-fronted) doves in the aggregate, to include not more than two whitetips.
Possession Limit

Possession Limit: twice the daily bag limit.

Regular Season: Sept. 21–Nov. 11, 2007 and Dec. 26, 2007–Jan. 8, 2008.

UVALDE County Details:  WT DEER—Archery Season: (countywide) Sept. 29-Nov. 2 (no antlerless permit required except on MLD property). North of U.S. Hwy. 90: General Season: Nov. 3-Jan. 6; Special Late General Season: Jan. 7-20 (antlerless and spike bucks only). Bag limit: 5 (no more than 2 bucks, all seasons combined). South of U.S. Hwy. 90: General Season: Nov. 3-Jan. 20; Special Late General Season: Jan. 21-Feb. 3 (antlerless and spike bucks only). Bag limit: 5 (no more than 3 bucks, all seasons combined).
